Washington Capitals bring back Screamin’ Eagle jersey for six games in 2024-25

An old-school look is coming back to the U.S. capital. On Tuesday, the Washington Capitals announced they are bringing back the Screamin’ Eagle logo for select games during the 2024-25 season.

The special uniforms will be worn during six home games this season to commemorate the franchise’s 50th season.

The logo was introduced in 1995 when the Capitals underwent a full-scale rebrand, ditching their old red-white-and-blue uniforms for a modern look. The black, blue, and bronze trim was used as a third jersey starting in 1997 but was made the team’s official road uniform beginning in 2000. However, the Screamin’ Eagle was ditched for a logo featuring the U.S. Capitol building, two crossed hockey sticks, and a puck.

The Screamin’ Eagle made a return in 2020, when the NHL introduced its first line of Reverse Retro jerseys. Washington brought back to the crest, with its mainstay “USA” colors. When the Reverse Retro 2.0 unis were introduced before the 2022-23 season, fans had the chance to see the Eagle come back with the black-based jersey, a move that was widely praised after a lackluster response from the initial Retros.

These jerseys are identical to the second Reverse Retros, with the Screamin’ Eagle on the front with the Capitol logo on the shoulders.

The first time Caps fans will see these sweaters in action will be on Nov. 6 against the Nashville Predators. The jerseys will also be worn against the New York Islanders (Nov. 29), Boston Bruins (Dec. 31), Pittsburgh Penguins (Jan. 18), Winnipeg Jets (Feb. 1) and in the team’s final home game of the regular season against the Columbus Blue Jackets (April 13).

In a release, the Capitals say the jerseys will be made available to the public for purchase on Oct. 10.
