The Washington Capitals were able to provide some clarity on the injury of Logan Thompson and what the recovery timeline will look like on Friday. Thompson is set to “miss a little bit of time,” according to Capitals head coach, Spencer Carbery.

Subsequently, the Capitals have recalled goaltender Hunter Shepard from the Hershey Bears.

Shepard will serve as the backup for Charlie Lindgren on Friday when the Captials take on Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Thompson exited Wednesday’s game versus the Carolina Hurricanes following an upper-body injury after facing 12 shots on net and letting in three goals.

Thompson has appeared in 42 games this season with the Capitals, putting up fantastic numbers, sitting at 31 wins, two shutouts, a 2.43 goals against average and a .912 save percentage. Thompson has been vital to the Capitals’ success this season, in which they rank first in the Metropolitan Division and first in the Eastern Conference. Due to the success, Washington re-signed Thompson to a six-year extension worth $ 5.85 million per season.

Acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights in a June deal that saw the Capitals part with a pair of third-round draft choices, Thompson spent the past four seasons with the Golden Knights, where, combined with his time with Washington he has put together a 78-34-14 career record with a .915 save percentage and 2.55 goals-against average.

Shepard has put together a 22-11-3 record for the Bears this year with a 2.81 goals-against average and a .891 save percentage. Shepard captured the 2023 AHL playoff MVP and 2024 AHL Goaltender of the Year and made four appearances for the Capitals last season, posting a 2-1-1 record in that frame.

Following Friday’s game versus Chicago, the Capitals will face the New York Islanders next.
