Capitals’ Logan Thompson to return for Game 1 against Canadiens

Logan Thompson is expected to start Game 1 on Monday when the Washington Capitals open their first-round series of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Montreal Canadiens, reports Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network.
Sidelined for the remaining seven games of the regular season, Thompson’s last appearance came versus the Carolina Hurricanes on April 2 where he allowed three goals on 12 shots before being forced to leave the game due to an upper-body injury. On the season, Thompson saw 43 outings with the Capitals in which he put together a 31-6-6 record coupled with a .910 save percentage, 2.49 goals-against average, and two shutouts.
Thompson is appearing in his first season with the Capitals following an offseason deal with the Vegas Golden Knights that saw him shipped to Washington in exchange for a pair of third-round draft selections.
A veteran of 146 career contests with the Golden Knights and Capitals, Thompson owns an 87-38-17 career mark with a .912 save percentage, 2.62 goals-against average, and six shutouts. A 28-year-old Calgary native, Thompson signed with the Golden Knights in 2020 as an undrafted free agent.
In late January, the Capitals signed Thompson to a six-year extension that carries a $5.85-million average annual value, per PuckPedia.
In Thompson’s absence, the Capitals turned to netminder Charlie Lindgren, who saw five of the final seven games to close out the year, a stretch in which he went 3-2-0 with an .881 save percentage and 3.15 goals-against average. On the season, Lindgren was 20-14-3 with an .896 save percentage, 2.73 goals-against average, and one shutout.
The Capitals enter the postseason with the best record in the Eastern Conference, having gone 51-22-9 for 111 points, a 20-point uptick from a year ago. In 2024-25, the Capitals and Canadiens went head-to-head three times, with Washington taking five of a possible six points.
