Washington Capitals President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Brian MacLellan has announced that the Capitals have re-signed goaltender Clay Stevenson to a three-year, $2.325 million contract extension.

According to the contract terms, the first year of the contract will be a two-way contract, while the second and third years will be a one-way deal.

The 24-year-old has been playing for the Capitals’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Hershey Bears. This season, he has compiled a 9-4-0 record with a 1.70 goals-against average, a .934 save percentage, and four shutouts in 13 games. He ranks first in the AHL in goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts, while tied for third in the wins column alongside Chris Driedger, Jesper Wallstedt, Jet Greaves and his tandem partner, Hunter Shepard.

Stevenson had signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Capitals in March 2022 following his season at Dartmouth College in the NCAA. Stevenson led the Big Green in wins, save percentage, goals-against average and shutouts during the 2021-22 season. Stevenson, who won the Phelan Award as Dartmouth’s MVP, was named to the 2021-22 All-Ivy First Team, the ECAC All-Rookie Team and the ECAC Third All-Star Team.

The Drayton Valley, Alberta native appeared in 36 games last season with the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL. He posted a record of 19-12-3 with a 2.54 goals-against average, a .916 save percentage and three shutouts. He made his AHL debut last winter against the Cleveland Monsters and earned his first AHL win in his first game. In 16 career AHL games, Stevenson has posted a 12-4 record.

Hershey currently sits first in the Atlantic Division and first in the AHL with a 19-6-0-0 record and 38 points. The Bears are set to face the Providence Bruins on Wednesday.
