Capitals sign Logan Thompson to 6-year extension
The Washington Capitals have secured a major part of their future as on Monday the club re-signed goaltender Logan Thompson to a six-year extension worth $5.85-million per season, reports Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Per PuckPedia, Thompson’s current contract carries a $766,667 annual average value, set to expire at season’s end when the netminder could have become an unrestricted free agent.
In his first season with the Capitals, Thompson has dominated, putting up a 22-2-3 record alongside a .925 save percentage and 2.09 goals-against that has helped vault Washington to the top of the NHL standings with 71 points.
Acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights in a June deal that saw the Capitals part with a pair of third-round draft choices, Thompson spent the past four seasons with the Golden Knights, where combined with his time with Washington he has put together a 78-34-14 career record with a .915 save percentage and 2.55 goals-against average.
A graduate of the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings, Thompson later saw stops in both the ECHL and AHL before signing with the Golden Knights in 2020 as an undrafted free agent. In 2020-21, as part of the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights, the Golden Knights’ top minor-league affiliate, Thompson was presented with the Baz Bastien Memorial Award as the league’s Goaltender of the Year after he went 16-6-1 with a .943 save percentage and 1.96 goals-against average in 23 outings.
Despite his strong play with the Capitals this season, the 27-year-old Calgary native was not named to the Canadian roster that will compete at the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off to take place next month in Boston and Montreal.
Thompson has previously represented Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Championship that saw him put up three wins with an .881 save percentage and 3.00 goals-against average en route to a silver-medal finish.
