Washington Capitals sign Sonny Milano to three-year contract extension
The Washington Capitals have signed forward Sonny Milano to a three-year contract extension, the club announced Saturday evening.
Milano, 26, has eight goals and 22 points in 40 games with the Capitals this year. His new deal carries a $1.9 million annual cap hit through the end of the 2025–26 season.

The Capitals initially signed Milano to a one-year, $750,000 contract for 2022–23 after he was released by the Calgary Flames after an unsuccessful training camp tryout.
The Columbus Blue Jackets originally selected Milano in the first round (No. 16 overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft. The six-foot, 194-pound winger spent parts of five seasons with the Blue Jackets, topping out with 14 goals in 55 games in 2017–18, before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks in 2020.
Milano developed chemistry with Ducks teammate Trevor Zegras in the 2021–22 season and posted some of the best numbers of his career, recording 14 goals and 34 points in 66 games. But the Ducks elected not to tender Milano a qualifying offer after the season, leaving him to sign with another team.
Eventually arriving in D.C. after a long stint as an unrestricted free agent, Milano currently sits in a tie for third place on the Capitals with eight even-strength goals this season and is on pace to surpass the career-high mark in points he set with the Ducks last year.
Milano and the Capitals (27–20–6) will return to action on Feb. 11 when they visit the high-flying Boston Bruins (39–7–5) at TD Garden.
