Washington Capitals trade Beck Malenstyn to Buffalo Sabres for pick No. 43

A trade to kick off day two of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

The Washington Capitals have traded forward Beck Malenstyn to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for pick No. 43 overall.

The 26-year-old tallied six goals and 15 assists for 21 points in 81 games during the 2023-24 season with Washington. Malenstyn appeared in four Stanley Cup Playoff contests as the Capitals were swept out of the first round by the New York Rangers.

Malenstyn is an unrestricted free agent, coming off a two-year, $1,525,000 contract he signed with the Capitals in 2022.

Malenstyn has appeared in 105 games with Washington, he was initially selected No. 145 overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Malenstyn has tallied 24 points over parts of five seasons. The White Rock, British Columbia product has primarily spent his pro career with the Capitals’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Hershey Bears. Malenstyn won a Calder Cup with the Bears during the 2022-23 campaign and registered 10 points in 40 games during the regular season; he added four goals and eight points in 20 AHL Playoff contests.
