The Washington Capitals announced that goaltender Logan Thompson exited Wednesday’s game versus the Carolina Hurricanes following an upper-body injury and is doubtful to return.

Thompson faced 12 shots against, letting in three goals to Sean Walker, Jackson Blake and Seth Jarvis before being relieved by Charlie Lindgren at the start of the second frame.

Thompson has appeared in 42 games this season with the Capitals, putting up fantastic numbers, sitting at 31 wins, two shutouts, a 2.43 goals against average and a .912 save percentage. Thompson has been vital to the Capitals’ success this season, in which they rank first in the Metropolitan Division and first in the Eastern Conference. Due to the success, Washington re-signed Thompson to a six-year extension worth $ 5.85 million per season.

Acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights in a June deal that saw the Capitals part with a pair of third-round draft choices, Thompson spent the past four seasons with the Golden Knights, where, combined with his time with Washington he has put together a 78-34-14 career record with a .915 save percentage and 2.55 goals-against average.

The Calgary native played his major junior hockey with the Brandon Wheat Kings where he captured a WHL championship. Thompson later saw stops in both the ECHL and AHL before signing with the Golden Knights in 2020 as an undrafted free agent. In 2020-21, as part of the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights, the Golden Knights’ top minor-league affiliate, Thompson was presented with the Baz Bastien Memorial Award as the league’s Goaltender of the Year after he went 16-6-1 with a .943 save percentage and 1.96 goals-against average in 23 outings.

An update on Thompson could come as early as post-game from head coach Spencer Carbery or in the coming days.

Next up for the Capitals, they face off against the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Islanders.
