‘We’re meant to be here’: Panthers’ Aaron Ekblad on Stanley Cup win

The Florida Panthers are back-to-back Stanley Cup champions – and defenseman Aaron Ekblad was a big part of both of them.
Ekblad has spent his entire NHL career with the Panthers since getting selected first overall in 2014. The pending UFA has now experienced three Stanley Cup Finals, with the past two obviously meaning a bit more to him.
Many have used the term “dynasty” to describe the Panthers’ run. And when talking to reporters on Tuesday evening, Ekblad showed his full belief in the organization.
“I said it a few times – I might regret it later – but it almost feels normal,” Ekblad said. “It’s where we’re meant to be. And we believe that as a team: We’re meant to be here. We’re gonna keep doing it.”
Ekblad missed the start of the playoffs after serving a 20-game suspension for failing the NHL’s PED policy. He was then suspended two games for a hit on Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brandon Hagel in the first round before the Panthers advanced to the second round against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Panthers won the Cup Final in six games, one fewer than they needed against the Edmonton Oilers a year ago. Florida scored twice in the first period on Tuesday, which proved to be all they needed to do. Vasily Podkolzin would score the lone goal for the Oilers, while Sam Reinhart had a massive night with four goals.
After the game, Ekblad was asked about whether or not he’d return to the only franchise he has ever played for. Ekblad is set to be an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and is seen as one of the top defensemen on the market.
“I don’t know what’s gonna happen, and I’m not in much control of that at the moment,” Ekblad said. “To live in the moment is most important for me. When the time comes, I’m sure those tough conversations will be had.”
