What can the Penguins do with Tristan Jarry?
Things seem to be going from bad to worse for Tristan Jarry and the Pittsburgh Penguins. After signing the goaltender to a five-year contract with a $5.375 million contract in 2023, he struggled in the 2023-24 season, even losing his job as the starting goaltender to Alex Nedeljkovic down the final stretch of the season as the Pens attempted to make the playoffs. Now, they’re only eight games into the season, and Jarry is already a healthy scratch on some nights, falling behind Joel Blomqvist on the depth chart as well.
Is it time for the Pens to move on from Jarry? Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk talked about whether there’s some fire to the smoke surrounding any Jarry trade talks on Daily Faceoff Live.
Frank Seravalli: There’s definitely some fire there. The problem is Jarry’s in the second year of a five-year deal that pays him $5.375 million Everyone can see his numbers, and I just I don’t understand why anyone would be willing to take on that type of contract, particularly at this moment in time. Even some of the teams who’s goaltending has faltered, I don’t know how you could then look at him and say, “Okay, well, this is a guy that’s going to come in and be the answer for us.” How could you confidently answer that way?
You don’t have to go back very far to have a period of time where a lot of people were really high on Tristan Jarry and his stature in the game. I think part of that has changed over a larger sample size, and I think the Pittsburgh Penguins are more or less stuck.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Yeah, it certainly feels like that. You mentioned with the contract, if he was a pending UFA, if he had one year left on his deal, maybe you could even find like a bad contract swap somewhere, but with the term attached to that thing, it’d be real tough to move on from.
