What to make of Linus Ullmark’s big extension with the Senators
The Ottawa Senators extended goaltender Linus Ullmark to a four-year, $8.25 million AAV contract through 2028-29.
Ullmark moved to the Canadian capital this past offseason when the Senators acquired him from the Boston Bruins for Joonas Korpisalo, Marc Kastelic, and the 25th overall pick (originally belonging to the Bruins), which resulted in Boston taking Dean Letourneau.
Today on Daily Faceoff Live, hosts Tyler Yaremchuk and Colby Cohen discuss Ullmark’s big extension and what it does for the Senators.
Tyler Yaremchuk: There was news off the ice this morning that the Ottawa Senators extended Linus Ullmark. Which I was a bit surprised about considering where Ullmark is at in his career and how the Senators have been, but he gets the same AAV as his good buddy Jeremy Swayman, but what do you think of the Senators extending Ullmark before even playing a game for them?
Colby Cohen: Look I think it’s a good decision, it brings stability to a place that has anything but over the last few seasons. What you’re buying here with Ullmark is not just a guy who is coming off a hot couple of seasons, you can even go back to his final two years in Buffalo where he had a .917 save percentage and .915 save percentage on teams that were sloppy defensively and many issues.
Colby Cohen: You’re looking at a guy who has a career .920 save percentage, has played in the playoffs, and has won a Vezina Trophy. But really going back over the last five seasons has been really confident goaltending, I like the deal, and I think the number was a bit higher compared to the term. It brings stability, the cap will continue to go up and it shows players in Ottawa that they are serious.
