What’s missing from the Vancouver Canucks?
After an exceptional 2023-24 season, leading to a run to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, many believed the Vancouver Canucks were going to come in the 2024-25 campaign with the same level of success.
However, that hasn’t been the case so far.
Granted, the Canucks haven’t been bad despite only winning four of their first nine games. Yet, with points in seven games, they are right up there with the best in the Pacific Division. They are currently tied for third with 11 points, despite playing one or two games less than most of the division. Their .611 winning percentage also has them sitting third behind the Vegas Golden Knights and Los Angeles Kings.
Yet, something is missing in Vancouver. The offense hasn’t been great, scoring just 27 goals so far, and Arturs Silovs, who was given the reins at the beginning of the season with Thatcher Demko still recovering, has been average.
On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Canucks Army’s Jeff Paterson joined Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk to explain what is absent with the Canucks so far.
Jeff Paterson: [Head coach] Rick Tocchet is a “staples” guy. He just loves talking about his board battles and wallwork and everything else. The staples have completely abandoned the Vancouver Canucks. This a team that gave up six goals on home ice once last year…it’s happened twice in the first five games at [Rogers Arena]. They have one win on home ice in the first five games. Tocchet talked about it last night–too many guys have gone rogue…In the playoffs [last year], all the lockdown, making things difficult to get to the net and score. Teams are scoring with ease [this season].
You mention the record, two outright losses in nine games, you think it can’t be that bad. [Kevin] Lankinen has sort of masked a lot of the problems of the Vancouver Canucks.
