What’s next for the Detroit Red Wings after Jake Walman trade?

There is a lot of speculation on what Steve Yzerman is cooking up in Hockeytown.

The Detroit Red Wings general manager orchestrated a trade that sent defenseman Jake Walman, along with a 2024 second-round pick, to the San Jose Sharks for future considerations. With that, the Red Wings gained $3.4 million in cap space to use…but for what?

With the NHL Draft and free agency coming up over the next week, many are wondering if Yzerman is going to make a big swing in order to give his team some more talent to snap Detroit’s eight-season postseason drought.

On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk talked about what potential moves Yzerman and the Red Wings are cooking up.

Frank Seravalli: Two things. One, the Detroit Red Wings are looking to improve their goaltending. There has been some significant talk between the Anaheim Ducks and John Gibson, and the Detroit Red Wings. I could really see that being a fit. I think that’s one situation to keep an eye on.

The next puzzle piece that Steve Yzerman is trying to put together with the Detroit Red Wings is improving this team’s defense core. The question is, how much cap space will he need? Simon Edvinsson’s coming, you need to get a new contract for Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond as well. They’re going to have to try and wrestle with all of those things at once, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Red Wings also make a big splash defensively. Who are some of the names that potentially could be available? Jacob Trouba of the New York Rangers, and also, in addition to that, Thomas Chabot of the Ottawa Senators.

What if there’s a scenario that the Ottawa Senators can offload Chabot, who has a 16-team no-trade clause that kicks in on Monday. Before that happens…that would enable [Ottawa] to keep [Jakob] Chychrun in place, work on an extension.
