Where does Alex Ovechkin rank among the NHL’s best all-time players?

One of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history has placed his name among the best of all time, but where does it rank him?
On Sunday, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored the 895th goal of his NHL career, surpassing legend Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in an NHL career.
For just about his entire career, Ovechkin has been recognized as one of the most efficient scorers the game has ever seen. Whether it be his patented one-timer or his ability to score 5-on-5, few have been able to slow down the GR8 over his 20-year career.
Across his illustrious career, Ovechkin has won a record nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophies as the league’s leading goal-scorer. He’s won the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award three times, as well as the Art Ross Trophy and Calder Trophy. When the Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2018, Ovi was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy.
On Monday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Matt Larkin discuss where Ovechkin ranks among the greatest players of all time.
Tyler Yaremchuk: I think you could probably argue – you can talk about the point totals, or whatever – being the greatest goal scorer of all time, to me, that puts you in the Mount Rushmore conversation, doesn’t it?
Matt Larkin: I think you’re right there. If you look at the way in which Maurice Richard was heralded for so many years, it was for his goal scoring. Ultimately, the goal is to score goals to win a hockey game. So, I think anyone who puts Ovi near the top five, I can see the argument.
I have him in the top 10, maybe a little lower in the top 10. Just the one Stanley Cup. Some of the guys I have higher, I think, just had a slightly better team game. Maybe they won more MVPs, or they won more Conn Smythe Trophies. They just affected the game a little bit more. So, I have Gretzky number one and Bobby Orr, Mario Lemieux. I think I have Sidney Crosby, probably four. Gordie Howe five. That’s my top five. Ovi, to me, is in the 6-10 range.
