Which team had the more disappointing season: Penguins, Red Wings or Flyers?
Frank Seravalli was joined by Colby Cohen to discuss which team playoff near-miss from the Eastern Conference had the most disappointing season on the latest episode of Daily Faceoff Live.
Frank Seravalli: Who had the more disappointing season, the Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers, or the Pittsburgh Penguins?
Colby Cohen: I think the Red Wings. You throw the Penguins in there because they have Sidney Crosby and that core. I think there’s obviously major disappointment. But I think the Red Wings have been looked at as this up-and-coming team now. Yzerman stood on his hands at the deadline because I think he truly knew they weren’t ready, which I actually agree with. I don’t see them as one player away. They still need to address the goaltending position like a number of other teams.
It’s disappointing because you bring in Patrick Kane and he’s been almost a point-per-game while he was there, I think he ended up with 47 or 48 points in 51 games, which is incredible for a guy coming off hip surgery the way he did. But I’d say the Detroit Red Wings are the team I’d pick from those three options.
Frank Seravalli: I’m going to say it’s the Flyers. I mentioned this on the DFO Rundown last week, perspective is key, like you knew heading into the season that the Flyers in all likelihood declared themselves rebuilding. You knew that they weren’t going to make the playoffs, they’re in the playoffs for 78 games this year, basically from the start of the season on. And then they don’t make aggressive moves at the deadline that they would have otherwise because they wanted to preserve their playoff chances.
They lost eight straight games, winning any one of those games would have probably got them into the playoffs and oh by the way they missed so they don’t have a spot in the draft lottery and have a zero percent chance of getting Macklin Celebrini. Does it get any more disappointing than that?
