Who holds the single-game scoring record for every NHL team?
On Saturday afternoon in Arizona, Coyotes right winger Nick Schmaltz became the 45th player in NHL history to score seven points in a game. He tallied two goals and seven points against the Ottawa Senators. On Jan. 12, 1918, Joe Malone was the first player in NHL history to score seven when he compiled five goals and seven points, also against the Ottawa Senators.
In the 104 years between Malone’s and Schmaltz’s seven-point games, the NHL has evolved significantly, with various rule changes, more games played, larger rosters and now 32 teams.
Seven-point games are rare. The last one was a decade ago when Sam Gagner had an eight-point night with the Edmonton Oilers on Feb 2, 2012. That night, Gagner tied Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey for most points in a game in Oilers franchise history.
On Saturday Schmaltz set a new standard for the Coyotes organization, and, considering only 12 players have scored eight points in a game, there is a good chance Schmaltz will forever be etched in Coyotes history.
He was the first Coyotes skater to score six points and then added a seventh for good measure. The Coyotes franchise record was six points, but the four players – Dale Hawerchuk (three times), Thomas Steen, Willy Lindstrom and Eddie Olczyk, accomplished the feat in Winnipeg before the franchise relocated to the Desert.
Schmaltz’s spectacular game got me curious to find out the single-game point record for all 32 franchises.
Before we get to that, here are four trivia questions (answers at end of article):
