Why the Ducks traded for Ville Husso

The Anaheim Ducks had a solid reason to add some stability in net.
On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk chatted about the Monday deal that saw the Ducks add veteran goaltender Ville Husso from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for future considerations.
Tyler Yaremchuk: The Red Wings had a couple of pieces of news come out over the past 24 hours. Andrew Copp is done for the season. It doesn’t necessarily mean LTIR space, but they do have close to $14 million in trade deadline cap space. They would have to spend all of that before a Copp LTIR stint would provide them any value, but they are up to $14 million because they were able to dump Ville Husso yesterday. In 30 seconds on that, why did the Ducks just agree to take that money for nothing?
Frank Seravalli: People don’t have the math right. It’s less than $1.3 million to close out this season. The Ducks have – not a crisis – but a bit of an issue in AHL San Diego with their goaltending. Calle Clang is out month-to-month. Oscar Dansk is the only other guy there with any form of experience. The Ducks really want that group in San Diego to go on a deep playoff run, so they’re willing to spend a little bit to shore up that position and make that happen. People immediately wanted to connect the dots of, ‘Oh, if they’re bringing in Ville Husso, and they’re willing to spend this money, then that means John Gibson is clearly on his way out and Husso is just going to be the backup to close out the year.’ Not the case and not connected. I still think a Gibson trade is a real longshot. Tell me which teams need a goalie? And if you’re going to say the Oilers, tell me then how they fit him in.
