Why Flames GM Craig Conroy traded for Morgan Frost

The Calgary Flames made a big splash late last month, trading Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier and a pair of picks to the Philadelphia Flyers for Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost.

It was an interesting move, helping to further spark a trade market that already saw Mikko Rantanen and Martin Necas swap homes the week prior. For the Flames, Farabee gave the team a nice scoring piece on the top line alongside Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau. Frost, meanwhile, helped fill a big need down the middle, where he currently centers the team’s third line.

As part of a big discussion on the trade, the season so far and much more on a recent episode of Frankly Speaking, Flames GM Craig Conroy broke down why he wanted Frost in particular with Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli:

Frank Seravalli: “As you worked your way around the chessboard and got a real good sense of what the landscape was, we know that you’ve been after a center for a while here. But what ultimately drew you to Morgan Frost, and why do you think he’s a fit?”

Craig Conroy: “Well, you look at his skill set, he’s got very nice hands, he sees the ice well, he transports it really well on the power play where we were having trouble getting the puck in. Winning draws on the faceoffs and on the power play was something we really focused on.

“And even when you see him out there, the coaches are very happy. He settles things down. He’s got great vision and the hands. The one thing you’re wondering, many people said he competes in and out, but I haven’t seen that at this point. So, hopefully, he just continues, and we want him to have fun and play and be himself and bring what he does best. We don’t want him to run guys. We want him to make plays and I don’t know if you saw the goal in Seattle. It was impressive. Very nice goal. It got us going, and, you know, we were trying to add some scoring.”
