Why it’s too early to be worried about Predators’ Jonathan Marchessault
This past offseason, the Nashville Predators made a flurry of moves, including the signings of Steven Stamkos, Brady Skeji and Jonathan Marchessault. While it hasn’t been a stellar start for the club, losing five straight in their first five games, they bounced back with a 4-0 win over the Boston Bruins Tuesday night.
Marchessault, who signed a five-year, $27.5 million contract on July 1, has one goal and three assists for four points through six games. Not exactly the attention-grabbing production we saw him of the Cap-Rouge, Que., native with the Vegas Golden Knights, scoring 42, 28 and 30 goals in his last three seasons, but it’s early enough in the year that it shouldn’t be a concern.
On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss Marchessault’s sluggish start and if the Predators are starting to have buyer’s remorse on the deal.
Tyler Yaremchuk: I’m not willing to say that the Predators are feeling buyer’s remorse, but there’s something to be said that when you spend as much as they did in unrestricted free agency, there’s a little buyer beware.
Marchessault is starting to produce, and I think it’s going to be fine, but the start does make you go, “Ehhhhh.”
Frank Seravalli: Let’s blame this all on Jason Gregor, because he said he didn’t like the contract. I didn’t think the contract had any risk, and I’ll tell you why: Last year, 42 goals, and he even said “That’s an outlier year,” since his career high was 30.
While that’s true, lets just say he drops back down to that 30-goal range. At $5.5 million, for 30 goals, that’s awesome. He’s only 33, and by the way, when he does get to later in his career, the salary cap should be at more than $110 million.
