The Stanley Cup Final got underway on Wednesday night as the Edmonton Oilers grabbed a 4-3 overtime win over the Florida Panthers to take an early lead in the series.

But when the players hit the ice for warmups, much of the discussion online was not centered around the game, but rather on the way sponsor patches and the traditional Stanley Cup Final patch look on the jerseys, especially for players serving as captains or alternate captains.

For players like captains Connor McDavid and Aleksandr Barkov, the letter on their jersey was crammed next to the Cup Final patch, with the advertisement all on its own on the other side.

On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff Live, host Tyler Yaremchuk and Insider and President of Hockey Content Frank Seravalli discussed the practicality of the layout and whether or not it’s an awkward look.

Tyler Yaremchuk: I’m a jersey nerd. Does the placement of the Stanley Cup Final patch drives you as nuts as it drives me because of the ad on the other side? Put it on the shoulders! Put it somewhere else.

Frank Seravalli: It does, but here’s the thing, they sold those jersey ads for major money. Like, they’re millions of dollars. You can’t just go back to your partner and say, “Hey, we crushed it all season for you, but we got to the Cup Final, and we’re moving you.” The reason why it’s there next to the “C” or “A” is because the sponsor is on the other side. So I’m with you, I don’t love it, but I wouldn’t put it anywhere else. I think there’s something special about being in that series, that game, that the patch is pretty awesome, and if it’s next to the “C,” it’s next to the “C.”

Tyler Yaremchuk: Ah, it just looks so crammed.
