Why there’s a lot to like about Flames’ acquisition of Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost
Late Thursday night, Daily Faceoff hockey insider Frank Seravalli reported the Calgary Flames acquired Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier, a 2025 second-round pick and a 2028 seventh-round pick.
On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the trade and why there’s a lot to like from the Flames’ perspective.
Frank Seravalli: I really like this deal from the Flames’ perspective. This is a team that has really struggled to score and they get two prime middle-six forwards whose value had been depressed by the nature of them needing a fresh start. The Flames have essentially added, what I think on the low end, is 45 goals and 90 points to their lineup.
Two guys that just fit with what they’re building: they’re under team control, the Flyers are happy to get rid of Joel Farabee’s contract, and this is a Flames team that, with Dustin Wolf in net, is much closer to the playoffs than they probably imagined. It’s not a deal to push them in now, but a deal that they would have made, regardless, as they’re trying to add skill and talent.
Tyler Yaremchuk: That’s where I’m going to echo what you’re saying. I like the Flames taking this shot. Wolf is legit, and you have your star to build around, even if it’s not your prototypical franchise centerman who will score 50 goals, but you have a star in Wolf. There’s no need to do a deep rebuild, and it’s basically impossible because Wolf will stop you from doing that.
Frank Seravalli: I think it was, anyway, with guys like Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar on the roster. Wolf just pushes you further away from that. This isn’t a massive move in the other direction, but a smart way to add skill and talent that doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg.
