The Calgary Flames kept things interesting until the final moments of the 2024-25 NHL season, but will ultimately fall short of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, potentially by only a tie-breaker.

Through 81 games, the Flames have secured 94 points, with the St. Louis Blues claiming the final Western Conference Wild Card with a final tally of 96 points. Calgary has one game remaining against the playoff-bound LA Kings, but cannot reclaim the tiebreaker against St. Louis.

Although the Flames held a spot in the Wild Card for large parts of the regular season, they were unable to match the form of the Blues and the Minnesota Wild since the NHL Trade Deadline, who eventually pulled away for the eventual postseason berths.

On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff Live, Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli look at what the 2024-25 season was for the Flames, and how general manager Craig Conroy could improve the team in the offseason.

Yaremchuk: It’s ‘Ask DFO’ time, Frank. Do you think the Flames will go all in next season? They’ve got cap space, they don’t have their own first-round pick, but they have two later first-round picks. Do you think Craig Conroy will get aggressive in trying to find some scoring this summer?

Seravalli: I think he’ll get aggressive in trying to find some scoring on the trade market. I don’t think it will be all in on spending on free agents, and I think they’re going to want players that fit their age scheme with what they’re building.

Think more along the ages of the guys they acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers, Morgan Frost, Joel Farabee, the 23, 24 and 25-year-old players that are going to become available. I think the Flames could also be one of those teams that takes a good look at the offer sheet market as well and see if anything pops up.
