While all eyes are on Game 7 between the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers on Monday, the conclusion of the game also means that we will truly see the offseason begin. Some moves have already happened, but there’s still plenty of big fish left on the market.

One of those potential big names is Toronto Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner, who’s entering the final year of his contract and, after numerous disappointing playoff runs with the Leafs, he may be the necessary move that the team needs to make to shake up the franchise going forward.

Frank Seravalli gave us some more updates on Marner’s situation and what may happen in the next week on Daily Faceoff Live.

Frank Seravalli: So no movement, but I just want to echo what I said this morning on Toronto radio because a lot of people seem to be surprised by it. Part of this is logical and comes down to asset management. I don’t think the Leafs have any interest in extending Marner. Marner’s already said through his camp and it’s been reported many times that he doesn’t want to sign an extension this summer. From his own end! And this is the exact time of year that you have to try and make something happen.

I think that’s their preference anyway, I think they’re going to do everything within their power to try and make something happen, but there’s nothing to share with him just yet. You can’t go to the Marner camp and say “Hey, let’s try and work on something.” You’re going to need to try and work something out yourself and then try and sell them on the idea.

Of course, he holds all the cards, but this is such an important week on that front.
