Winnipeg Jets re-acquire Mason Appleton from the Seattle Kraken

The Winnipeg Jets are bringing back Mason Appleton.

The Canadian club re-acquired Appleton from the Seattle Kraken Sunday night in exchange for a 2022 fourth-round pick, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli confirmed. Appleton was selected by the Kraken in the expansion draft.

He’s appeared in 49 games for the Kraken this year, picking up six goals and 17 points.

Drafted by the Jets in the sixth round of the 2015 draft, Appleton had just started coming into his own before the expansion draft. In the 2020-21 season, Appleton had a career-high 12 goals and 25 points in 56 games in Winnipeg.

This past year, when Appleton was on the ice at 5-on-5, the Kraken controlled 49.77 percent of the shot attempts, 45.45 percent of the goals scored and 46.15 percent of the expected goal share. His PDO of 98.2 is largely due to a low on-ice save percentage of 89.76, suggesting there’s room for better on-ice results as a whole in his game.

Appleton, however, is known for his defensive play. According to hockeyviz.com, his isolated impacts have been good for a bottom-six player. Offensively he contributes at a league-average rate while defensively, his isolated impact has him contributing at a two-percent rate above league average.
