Athanasiou returned to practice on Friday but remains a game-time decision for the Red Wings season opener. Valtteri Filppula rotated with Athanasiou on the power-play in practice, which suggests that head coach Jeff Blashill is prepared to play without Athanasiou.

Athanasiou has missed the last two practices but returned to the ice on Friday afternoon. Athanasiou’s availability for practice suggests that he will be in the lineup for the Red Wings’ season opener on Saturday.

Athanasiou missed the final two games before the Christmas break but is expected to retune to the lineup on Thursday. Athanasiou is expected to skate with Luke Glendening and Michael Rasmussen and returns with 11 goals and nine assists (20 points) in 32 games this season.



Athanasiou has missed the last four games, but is expected to play vs. the Rangers on Friday. Athanasiou has generated a lot of chances (36 shots) this season but has just four goals and two assists (six points) in 11 games.

Athanasiou was originally listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game in Columbus, but was ruled out after the morning skate. With Athanasiou and Frans Nielsen both out, Thomas Vanek and Jacob De La Rose will move into the Red Wings’ top-6.

Athanasiou played just 12:21 TOI in Sunday’s win over Dallas, leaving prematurely with an undisclosed injury. If Athanasiou can’t play, look for the Red Wings to call-up a forward from Grand Rapids (AHL).








Athanasiou missed Tuesday’s game in Carolina, but took part in today’s morning skate and is listed as a game-time decision. If Athanasiou can’t play again, look for Ben Street to remain in the lineup.



Athanasiou has been out since November 10th, but will be back in vs. Columbus on Friday. Athanasiou has blazing speed and good hands, but has been limited to just 12:06 TOI/GM in 13 games this season. In limited playing time, Athanasiou has collected four goals and one assist.
