The Maple Leafs have re-signed Calvin Pickard to a one-year deal worth $800K.

Pickard, 26, was acquired in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights in early-October and spent the majority of the season in the AHL. Pickard, who is currently No.4 on the Maple Leafs’ goaltending depth chart, was 21-9-1 with a 2.31 GAA, .918 SV% and one shutout in 33 games with the Marlies. He gave up four goals on 27 shots in his only NHL appearance with the Maple Leafs.

Pickard allowed four goals on 28 shots in the Maple Leafs loss in Colorado last Friday. He got the nod because Curtis McElhinney was hurt but with McElhinney back at practice today, Pickard returns to the Marlies where he is enjoying a strong year.

With Curtis McElhinney hurt, it looks like Pickard will start against his former team tonight in Colorado. The Maple Leafs have acquired Calvin Pickard from the Golden Knights for Tobias Lindberg and a 2018 6th round pick.

Pickard was placed on waivers on Thursday and cleared Friday afternoon. The Maple Leafs waited for him to clear because now they can send him to the Toronto Marlies (AHL) and keep him in their system. This is a smart move for Toronto, who’s current backup goaltender is veteran Curtis McElhinney, who has had his fair-share of struggles during his career.

Pickard allowed five goals on 23 shots in Colorado’s loss in Detroit on Saturday. Jeremy Smith got the net on Sunday, but they’ll come back to Pickard tonight vs. the Blues. Pickard has lost three of his last four starts while allowing 11 goals on 117 shots (.906 SV%). In the middle of the fantasy playoffs, he should be strapped to your bench or free agency.

Pickard allowed one goal on 35 shots in Colorado’s loss in Arizona on Monday. It was a strong performance, but the Avalanche couldn’t solve Mike Smith at the other end. He will make his fifth straight start tonight vs. the Red Wings—Pickard has gone 2-2-0 with a 2.01 GAA and .933 SV%.

Pickard gave up four goals on 31 shots in Colorado’s loss to the Senators on Saturday. The loss snapped a brief two-game winning streak for Pickard, who has just 12 wins on the season. Tonight he’ll face the Coyotes for the third time this season—he is 1-1-0 with a 3.03 GAA and .882 SV% in the first two.

Pickard allowed two goals on 27 shots in Colorado’s win over the Devils. Pickard has won two in a row while turning aside 50 of 53 shots (.943 SV%). He stopped 40 of 42 shots in a 2-1 loss in Ottawa on March 2nd and will be looking for redemption tonight.

Pickard stopped 25 of 26 shots in Colorado’s win over the Hurricanes’ on Tuesday. It was a great outing for a struggling netminder, who will make his second straight start tonight vs. the Devils. Pickard is 5-9-2 with a 2.79 GAA and .909 SV% at the Pepsi Center this season and New Jersey is 12-16-6 on the road.
