Chris Gibson News

Gibson turned aside 47 of 50 shots in the Islanders overtime loss in Pittsburgh on Saturday. It was a tough luck loss for Gibson, who was making his season debut, following 33 strong games in Bridgeport (AHL). He will look for his second NHL win in his sixth career game tonight in Edmonton.

With Thomas Greiss hurt and Jaroslav Halak losing five in a row, including last night, Gibson will make his first NHL start of the season tonight. The 25-year-old, former second-round pick has gone 18-11-1 with a 2.31 GAA, .909 SV% and four shutouts in 33 games with Bridgeport (AHL) this season. His first start comes against one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.

Gibson, 23, spent the majority of the 2015-16 season with Bridgeport (AHL), where he went 19-11-6 with a 2.70 GAA and .909 SV% in 42 games. He also appeared in four games with the Islanders, going 1-1-1 with a 3.40 GAA and .882 SV%. Gibson will be fourth on the Islanders’ depth chart and start the 2016-17 season as the Sound Tigers’ starter.

Gibson allowed three goals on 32 shots in the Islanders win in Washington on Tuesday. Thomas Greiss got the call on Thursday, but they’ll go back to Gibson vs. the Sabres. He had a strong year going in the AHL and just collected a W over the NHL’s top team, so he could be a decent value option vs. Buffalo. However, the Islanders are going to be without some key members of their team.

Gibson, 23, appeared in one NHL game this season, stopping 16 of 17 shots in a relief effort back in January. The former second round pick (2011) has gone 19-11-6 with a 2.70 GAA and .909 SV% in 42 games with Bridgeport (AHL) this season. He will get thrown to the wolves tonight when he faces the NHL’s top ranked team in Washington.

Gibson, 23, has gone 19-11-6 with a 2.70 GAA and .909 SV% in 42 games with Bridgeport this season. With Jaroslav Halak still out and now J-F Berube banged up, Gibson has been recalled to backup Thomas Greiss.

Gibson only entered one game during his call-up, stopping 16 of 17 shots in the Islanders loss in Pittsburgh last night. Gibson heads back to Bridgeport where he is 11-5-3 with a 1.99 GAA and .928 SV% this season.

Gibson was recalled to backup James Reimer for the last two games because Jonathan Bernier was out with an illness. With Gibson going back to the minors, Bernier is obviously ready to go on Wednesday vs. the Bruins.

There is no immediate update as to why Gibson is being recalled. Jonathan Bernier is expected to get the start, so James Reimer could be dealing with a minor injury or illness. Expect an update at 3 PM ET when the team arrives to the rink.
