Danny Cleary News

DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings forward Danny Cleary will be out for a few games, coach Mike Babcock said, after he received an injection in his sore left knee.

Cleary likely misses about a week due to this injury. The third line winger scored 11 goals and 27 points through 55 games. Look for Jan Mursak to replace him in the lineup.

The problem is, Cleary estimates he'd need to be out a week after having the the knee drained. And there's not many breaks in the schedule.

Cleary will need to bite the bullet and get his knee drained at some point in the season. Through 52 games, he scored 11 goals and 25 points. Look for Jan Mursak to take his place in the lineup.

Danny Cleary is going to be with Henrik Zetterberg and Valtteri Filppula, giving Cleary a chance to be more of a net-front guy.

Cleary has struggled in the early going despite playing mainly with Pavel Datsyuk. The Newfoundland native has two goals and five points through his fist 16 games this season and should not be aversely effected by moving to the Henrik Zetterberg line.

Danny Cleary skated hard today, showing no signs of the upper-body injury that will keep him for the weekend. Cleary said the injury might affect him for six weeks but that he could be ready for the regular season opener, Oct. 7 against Ottawa at home.

Sounds like a concussion although Cleary denies that it is. Last season, he potted a career-high 26 goals and 46 points. Expect a prospect like Tomas Tatar to fill-in if Cleary can't play in the season opener.

Cleary suffered an undisclosed upper-body injury in Friday's preseason game against Philadelphia. Stuart has been nursing a sore groin. "We're hoping (Cleary) will be ready for the season opener, it's nothing serious,'' Holland said. "If he's not ready for the first weekend, then I assume he'd be ready for the second weekend.''

Cleary plays a vital role on the team and was expected to flank Pavel Datsyuk as a two-way winger. Last season, he potted a career-high 26 goals and 46 points. Expect a prospect like Tomas Tatar to fill-in if Cleary can't play in the season opener.
