“We still expect he's going to be ready in the first round of the playoffs; not Game 1, but anytime from Game 2 on,'' Holland said. “He's done pretty good healing the last nine days.''

Although Helm won't play for the rest of the regular season, he expects to be a regular contributor for the Wings come playoff time. The speedy center scored nine goals and 26 points in 68 games.

The Detroit Red Wings center, out with a sprained left MCL, said his goal is to be ready for Game 1 of the playoffs, which is three weeks away.

Helm is hoping to return within three weeks, much earlier than his timetable of 4-6 weeks. The Red Wings' center scored nine goals and 26 points in 68 games.

Helm isn't certain how long he will be out, with what appears to be a left knee or leg injury suffered in Saturday's 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks, but it doesn't sound like it's a day-to-day situation.

Helm is just the latest member of the Red Wings to go down at the wrong time. No word on how long he will miss but the speedy center is not expected to play for a few games.

DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings center Darren Helm hurt his groin in practice today and will miss the next two games, Friday at Chicago and Saturday at home against St. Louis, general manager Ken Holland said.

Helm has played very well over the season and was regarded as one of Babcock's most important forwards. The Winnipeg native has four goals and 12 points over 36 games. He will be reevaluated on Monday.

"I don’t think anyone was aiming for heads," said Helm, who took the ice for the first time 9:40 into the game. "It was the result of pucks being thrown around. I didn’t see it coming. It hurt a lot. I came back and the game was going pretty fast.

Helm was hit high with an errant shot during warmups but only missed about a half of a period. He won't miss any further playing time.
