Dustin Penner News

Dustin Penner came off the ice “not feeling well,” in the words of Terry Murray, and Penner’s availability for tomorrow’s game is in question. Murray did not elaborate.

No word on the extent of Penner's injury. Last season the power forward scored 23 goals and 45 points in a down season. With a full, healthy year in Los Angeles, he could return to the 60-point range.

After the game, when asked about Dustin Penner’s status, and why he missed the game, Terry Murray paused, then said that he made the decision to scratch Penner in order to get another look at Dwight King. Before the game, a team spokesman said Penner “had an injury,” and that Murray would give an update after the game.

Penner skated with Mike Richards and Dustin Brown during practice today, indicating he is OK. Last season the power forward scored 23 goals and 45 points in a down season. With a full year in Los Angeles, he could return to the 60-point range.

Penner reportedly dropped more than 15 pounds during the summer and said he added muscle as well, and he will get a high-profile chance to prove himself, in a contract year, playing alongside center Anze Kopitar and right winger Justin Williams on the Kings’ first line. Kopitar and Penner had some success together, after Penner arrived via trade from Edmonton and before Kopitar suffered his season-ending leg injury.

Penner scored only two goals and six points in his 19 regular season games as a King. The 28-year-old power forward will be given every opportunity to succeed in California, with the team hoping he can return to his 30-goal form.

Better than I ever have. I think I’ve gained muscle mass, and that’s probably from doing 2,000 yards of lunges every day in the summer. There’s a lot more focus on strength and flexibility, as a combination, as opposed to just strength. I learned a lot.”

Penner scored only two goals in 19 regular season games for the Kings last season. A slimmed down Penner with a better supporting cast should improve on those numbers and bounce back to the 50-60 point range.
