Jimmy Howard News

Jimmy Howard said he's doubtful to start Red Wings game Tuesday against Columbus.

Howard was supposed to start this afternoon but was a late scratch due to a bruised hand. If he can't go tomorrow, expect Jonas Gustavsson to start. Gustavsson made 28 saves in a 3-2 win over the Bruins today, so I think the Red Wings feel comfortable rolling with him tomorrow.

Howard turned aside 32 shots in a 5-2 win over the Flyers on Saturday. The win was his third of the season and dropped his GAA to 2.39 while his SV% sits at .922. Detroit is in Boston where he will face the Bruins for the second time. He allowed four goals on 37 shots in a 4-1 loss to the B's on October 5th.

Howard played very well on Thursday, stopping 34 of 37 shots, but the Red Wings played poorly in front of him. After starting 2-0 he has lost each of his last two starts. He will face a Flyers team still searching for an identity under new head coach Craig Berube.

Howard allowed four goals on 37 shots in the Red Wings first loss of the season on Saturday. Boston carried the play to the Wings for the majority of the night, leaving Howie little chance for success. He will get the nod tomorrow against the Coyotes after Detroit had the last three days off.

Howard allowed two goals on 25 shots in a 3-2 overtime win over the Hurricanes. Howard is now 2-0 on the season with a 1.47 GAA and .933 SV%, a great start for Red Wings netminder. He will have the toughest challenge to date when the Wings take on the Bruins in Boston.

Howard had his second elite season in a row in 2012-13. He was 21-13-7 with a 2.13 GAA, .923 SV% and tied for the NHL lead in shutouts with five. His strong play was rewarded with a six-year contract extension. His career 2.39/.917 suggest that he is going to stay near the top of fantasy's best netminders. He is on one of the best teams he's played on in his career and he should reap all the benefits.

Howard will start Game 4.

Howard was excellent once again in Game 3 where he stopped 39 of the 40 shots thrown his way. The Blackhawks were in Howard's crease all night long but it didn't phase him as he led the Wings to a 2-1 series lead. Another win at Joe Louis Arena tonight will put the Hawks on the brink of elimination.

Howard will start Game 1 vs. Chicago despite battling a sore hamstring.

Howard played very well in the first round series vs. Anaheim. He posted a 2.74 GAA and .911 SV% in that series which are not fantastic numbers but the Ducks scored more than a couple fluky goals on Howard. Brendan Smith scored on his own net and they had a couple go in by just throwing it on net and getting bounces, no fault of Howard's. He will need to be the backbone of the Wings again in the second round if they are going to take down the #1 seed Blackhawks.

Howard played well yet again in Game 6 and is the reason the Red WIngs are still alive. He stopped 34 of 37 shots in the 4-3 OT win. The Red Wings appeared to have a firm grasp of Game 6 until a ghastly turnover by Filppula gave the Ducks a chance to make it 3-2. Anaheim tied it up 51 seconds later and forced OT.

Howard will start the crucial Game 6.

Howard was fantastic in Game 5 but still allowed three goals on 34 shots. He made some spectacular saves in the first period to keep the Red Wings in it. Unfortunately for Jimmy, the Wings hit a couple of posts in the second that could have all but iced the game. The Wings obviously need to win this one to force Game 7, so Howard will need to be at his best at the Joe tonight.

Howard will start Game 4.

After a really strong regular season for Howard he has struggled so far in the playoffs. He ranks 15th out of 18 goalies in GAA (3.33) and SV% (.885). THe Red Wings need a win at home tonight. Howard was 13-7-4 with a 2.12 GAA and .923 SV% at Joe Louis Arena this season.
