Staal has missed the last four games with a concussion and he is expected to miss the next three games because he will stay in Caroline while the team embarks on a west coast road trip.
Staal was caught by a stick in the head/neck area on Sunday and is reportedly out indefinitely after a suffering a concussion. This is a tough blow for the Hurricanes, who will be without their best two-way centre. Look for both Elias Lindholm and Victor Rask to play an increased role with Staal out. Phil Di Giuseppe was also recalled in a corresponding move.

With Staal out, Victor Rask played 20:49 and Jay McClement played 15-plus minutes for the second time in 21 games. Staal has not played yet this season after fracturing his fibula in the preseason. He will make his season debut on a line with his brother Eric and Nathan Gerbe. Staal had a bad year in 2013-14 and the Hurricanes were looking for a bounce-back season, but this is not a good start. The injury likely means that Elias Lindholm will be thrust into a larger role this season. Don't expect to see Staal until late December or mid-January.
Staal was injured in a collision with Sabres' defenseman Josh Gorges. He left the ice unable to put any weight on his leg and was seen leaving the rink on crutches with a cast on his ankle/foot. Head coach Bill Peters did not have an update on Staal, but did say "I'm concerned, for sure." Stall will return to Carolina to be reevaluated.

Despite the steep price, Staal is reunited with his brother and could be poised for a breakout season at only 24 years old.
