Mathieu Perreault News

After cracking the NHL roster out of camp for the first time in his career, Perreault has five points (three goals, two assists) in five games.

Perreault has looked good over his first five games and has filled in admirably for Jay Beagle. He may have some short-term fantasy hockey value for deeper leagues.

Most notably, there was Mathieu Perreault centering Alexander Semin and Troy Brouwer on what could be considered the second line.

Perreault made the team mostly because he can rotate between the first and third line when called up, or sit when he is not. Last season he scored seven goals and 14 points over 35 games with the Capitals. Expect around 20 points this season if he continues to shuffle in the lineup sporadically.

That means the Caps start with six healthy defensemen and John Erskine and that Mathieu Perreault was the winner of the battle for the final roster spot.

Perreault made the big club but will need to compete for his playing time. Last season he scored seven goals and 14 points over 35 games with the Capitals. He should center the third line at some point this year.

“Well, we have an idea. We know what we’re going to do. I think our best player all of camp was Perreault,” Boudreau said. “Played with energy every night and I think he was very similar last year but we’ll sit down tomorrow and discuss all of this.”

The diminutive center proved everything he could in the AHL, leading most to think he sticks with the team. When playing a top six role he plays significantly better than on a bottom line. At this point it sounds like he sticks with the club as a healthy scratch ready to jump into the top-6 if necessary.

“I think we know enough of Matty to know another day isn't going to change the way we feel about him,” coach Bruce Boudreau said. “We just want him to be ready to hopefully play on Sunday. So I don't think it hurts him, no.”

Good to know Perreault still has a chance of making the team. The diminutive pivot showed in the past he is capable of producing, in spurts, at the NHL level but don't select him until he makes the team.

Mathieu Perreault was given a day off Thursday - a "maintenance day" in hockey terms - a team spokesman said.

Definitely doesn't help his chances of making the team. The diminutive pivot showed in the past he is capable of producing, in spurts, at the NHL level but don't select him until he makes the team.

Perreault will be among a handful of players battling for a spot on the 23-man roster when camp opens Saturday morning at KCI. And at 23 years of age, the diminutive center knows his days of being considered a prospect are dwindling.

Perreault has a very slim chance at taking the third line center role unless the Caps undergo a significant amount of injuries as recent reports indicate Mattias Sjogren and Cody Eakin hold the inside track. Nevertheless, the diminutive pivot showed in the past he is capable of producing, in spurts, at the NHL level.
