Matthew Phillips News
Phillips played 13:52 time-on-ice Tuesday, only four seconds less than his season-high, as he made his way onto the Capitals second-line and second powerplay unit. He received a maintenance day on Wednesday and did not participate in practice after blocking a shot in the team's 3-0 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday. Phillips has four points (1G / 3A) in 14 games this season.
Phillips finished fifth in AHL scoring with Calgary (AHL) in 2022-23 with 36 goals, 40 points, 12 PIMs and a +16 plus/minus through 66 games and has signed a one-year, one-way contract with the Washington Capitals. The 25-year-old right-winger was Calgary's sixth-round pick (166th overall) in 2016 and has played in three career NHL games, failing to pick up a point.
Phillips will head to the press box as a healthy scratch Wednesday after failing to pick up a point in a short two-game showing while also getting two PIMs and one SOG. Phillips had 15 goals and 15 assists in 20 games with the Calgary Wranglers (AHL) prior to his call-up to the Flames.
Phillips has earned his second career call-up after absolutely tearing up the AHL with the Wranglers (AHL) as he is currently first in goals (15), 12th in assists (15) and 1st in the entire league in points (30). Phillips has only ever played one NHL game to date back in 2020-21, where he picked up two shots.
Phillips was a sixth-round pick (No.166 overall) in 2016 and could make his NHL debut on Tuesday. The 21-year-old leads Stockton with 25 points (9G / 16A) in 22 games this season. Matthew Tkachuk was banged up last night and Phillips could end replacing him if he can't play on Tuesday.
