This is not surprising news after the picture of his swollen face surfaced. Mumps effects everyone differently so the timeline for his return is uncertain. The Penguins are expected to hold a press conference at 11:30 PM ET, where more details should be released.
Crosby is dealing with an illness and will be held out of the next two games as a precaution. He will undergo further testing in the next few days to determine the nature of the illness. The Penguins are expected to get Patric Hornqvist and Kris Letang back tonight, but losing Crosby is detrimental.
Crosby missed Thursday’s practice because he was under the weather, but he is on the ice this morning for the game-day skate, so expect him to suit up tonight vs. Calgary. He could also have Patric Hornqvist returning to his wing tonight.

The Penguins announced on Thursday that he would be held out of the early portion of camp as a precautionary measure as he recovers from a minor undisclosed injury. Crosby is coming off of his healthiest season in four years, so it is a great sign to see him back on the ice right away. The injury is reportedly not related to the wrist injury he decided not to get surgery on this summer.
There was a lot of talk about Crosby requiring surgery this offseason, but after further evaluation the Penguins have determined that he will continue to get treatment, but avoid surgery.
"Sidney Crosby has been undergoing treatment on a right wrist injury that he suffered during the season," general manager Jim Rutherford said in a statement. "Sid is getting medical advice to determine the best path moving forward, including the possibility of arthroscopic surgery. No final decision has been made on surgery at this point. We expect to have a decision by early next week." After leading the League in scoring during the regular season (36 goals, 68 assists), Crosby had one goal and eight points in 13 playoff games.
Crosby missed Sunday's game in Colorado, but will be back in tonight vs. the Red Wings. This could be a preview of the Penguins first-round playoff matchup. Two of Crosby's 36 goals this season have come vs. the Red Wings. Obviously, when he is available, he is in your lineup.
The Penguins announced that they will not have Crosby tonight due to an upper-body injury. His injury is not believed to be serious according to head coach Dan Bylsma. Consider Crosby day-to-day.
It will be Crosby's first game since sustaining a broken jaw during a game March 30. During the team's morning skate Friday, Crosby took line rushes in his usual spot, centering a line with Chris Kunitz and Pascal Dupuis. He also worked on the team's top power-play unit.
This is the first time that Crosby has skated on a regular line since rejoining practice last Friday.
Crosby who has been out since March 30th, is not quite ready to make his return from a broken jaw. This is a tough break for the Penguins but they have more than enough talent to win without Sid. Evgeni Malkin will be leaned on heavily to get the Pens off on the right foot in game 1.
Crosby practiced on the Pens fifth line in practice so it doesn't look like he will play tonight. We'll wait for an official word from the Penguins this afternoon.
Crosby did not practice on a regular line this morning. He was on the 'fifth' line which would suggest that he won't play tomorrow. However he is Sidney Crosby and he wants to play hockey. Monitor his status tomorrow.
