Spencer Martin News
Martin was serving as Semyon Varlamov’s backup with both Jonathan Bernier and Andrew Hammond being sidelined by concussions. Bernier is set to return as Varlamov’s backup on Tuesday, so Martin heads back to the Rampage, where he has gone 13-12-0 while posting a 3.06 GAA and .894 SV% in 30 games.
Calvin Pickard has played well recently, so the Avalanche likely want to allow Martin to get some games in with San Antonio while Pickard starts with the big club. He has swapped places with Jeremy Smith and goes to the Rampage with a 15-10-0 record, 2.72 GAA and .912 SV% in 28 games.
Martin allowed five goals on 26 shots in Colorado’s loss to San Jose on January 23rd. Martin allowed eight goals on 56 shots (.857 SV%) in his first two NHL starts—both vs. San Jose. Martin will make his third appearance tonight and will come against a Kings team that also played last night.
Martin gave up three goals on 30 shots in an overtime loss in his NHL debut in San Jose on Saturday. It was a pretty good debut for the 21-year-old, who will get another crack at the Sharks tonight. Despite playing well on Saturday, it is difficult to trust a rookie netminder against an offence with as much firepower as San Jose possesses.
Martin, 21, was a third round pick (No.63 overall) in 2013 and will make his NHL debut tonight in San Jose. Martin comes to the NHL after going 15-9-0 with a 2.62 GAA and .915 SV% in 27 games with San Antonio (AHL) this season, but will be a risky spot-start tonight.

Martin served as Calvin Pickard’s backup for three games while Semyon Varlamov was sidelined with a groin injury. With Varlamov back on Tuesday, Martin returns to San Antonio, where he has gone 11-7-0 with a 2.31 GAA and .924 SV%.
