Toronto Maple Leafs News

Stolarz will start Thursday vs. the Kings.

Stolarz stopped all 38 shots that he faced in the Flyers shutout win over the Rangers on January 29th. Stolarz has turned in a couple of outstanding performances this season but has mixed them in with some duds. It’s hard to know what to expect from the 25-year-old but the Flyers are red-hot right now and have a terrific matchup vs. the Kings, so you should at least consider spot-starting him.

The Maple Leafs have signed Auston Matthews to a five-year contract extension worth $58.17 million ($11.634M AAV).

Matthews was set to become a restricted free-agent this summer but signed through 2023-24 with an $11.634M cap-hit. Matthews has had a strong season, scoring 23 goals on 121 shots (19.0 SH%) with 23 assists (46 points) in 38 games. Matthews has broken through as one of the best goal-scorers in the league but continues to have a difficult time staying healthy—missing 20 games last season and 14 so far this year.

Murray will start Tuesday vs. the Hurricanes.

Murray allowed three goals on 33 shots in the Penguins loss in Toronto on Saturday. The Penguins are riding Murray like a clear-cut No.1 and tonight he makes his 26th start of the season and second vs. the Hurricanes. Murray stopped all 39 shots that he faced in a 3-0 shutout win in his first start vs. Carolina (Dec.22).

Murray led the Penguins onto the ice for warmups.

Murray surrendered just two goals on 35 shots in the Penguins win over the Lightning on Wednesday. Murray continues to play very well, finishing January at 6-2-0 with a 2.62 GAA, .917 SV% and one shutout. Murray is also 1-1-0 with a 2.57 GAA, .928 SV% and one shutout in two games vs. the Maple Leafs this season.

Murray will start Wednesday vs. the Lightning.

Murray allowed six goals on 32 shots in the Penguins loss to New Jersey on Monday. It was a rare loss for Murray, who has been lights out since returning from injury. Tonight he draws a brutal matchup vs. the NHL’s top team—Murray allowed four goals on 26 shots in a 4-3 loss in his first start vs. the Lightning (Nov.15).

The Maple Leafs have acquired Jake Muzzin from the Kings for Carl Grundstrom, the rights to Sean Durzi and a 2019 first-round pick.

Toronto needed to bolster their blueline and did so by adding Muzzin, who has spent the first seven seasons of his career in Los Angeles. The Maple Leafs really needed a right-handed defenseman but Muzzin was a much cheaper alternative and goes to Toronto with one more season on his contract that carries a $4.0M AAV cap-hit. Muzzin, who is 6-foot-3, 213 lbs., who can produce solid offensive numbers and play physically. He projects to play on the top-pair with Morgan Rielly, which will allow Ron Hainsey to play significantly less taxing minutes.

Murray will start Monday vs. the Devils.

Murray allowed two goals on 33 shots in the Penguins win in Arizona on January 18th. Unsurprisingly, Murray will start the first game out of the Penguins’ bye week and comes in having gone 10-1-0 with a 1.81 GAA, .944 SV% and two shutouts in 11 games since returning from injury. Murray has been excellent and is a quality option against a Devils team that is still missing Taylor Hall.
