This will be Gallant’s fourth head coaching gig in the NHL. He had an unsuccessful run with the Columbus Blue Jackets in the mid-2000s and, nearly a decade later, was hired by the Florida Panthers. Gallant led the Panthers to a surprising Atlantic Division victory in 2015-16 but was unceremoniously fired the following season after the team got off to an 11-10-1 start.
After just a few months out of work, Gallant was named the first-ever coach of the Vegas Golden Knights. He would help lead the team to the Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural season but was fired mid-way through the 2019-20 season despite the team owning the best record in the division.
Gallant will be with 36th coach in Rangers’ history. David Quinn, who lasted three seasons behind the bench, was fired shortly after the end of the 2021 season.
