15 NHL players placed on waivers for Sept. 22
Let the wire madness commence.
On Tuesday, 15 players were placed on waivers as training camp continues across the NHL, making them available to the other 31 teams in the league.
Whoever clears the wire on Wednesday will be eligible to join their respective American Hockey League affiliate.
One of the notable names on the list is a few minor-league veterans from the Detroit Red Wings. Forwards Dominik Shine, Sheldon Dries and John Leonard are all set to join the Original Six team’s top farm team, the Grand Rapids Griffins. Shine has been a fan favorite in Grand Rapids for a decade and has earned a special place in Red Wings fans’ hearts for his work ethic. He finally made his NHL debut during the 2024-25 season, after over eight years in the minors. He appeared in 18 games last season with Detroit, scoring three goals. He had a solid 39 points in 40 games with the Griffins, captaining the team to the best record in the AHL’s Western Conference.
Leonard and Dries were two of GR’s top-scoring weapons last season. Leonard led the team with 33 goals and 54 points in 47 games, while Dries was second on the Griffins with 45 points. Leonard appeared in 11 games with the Wings, notching two goals and four points, while Dries went pointless in five games.
Four members of the New York Rangers were placed on waivers, including defenseman Urho Vaakanainen. The key return to New York in the Jacob Trouba trade, the Finnish blueliner dressed in 34 games for the Blueshirts last season, notching six assists. He’s heading into the second season of his two-year contract, which carries a cap hit of $1.55 million

All five players put on waivers on Monday, including Seattle Kraken forward Jon-Randall Avon and Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Derrick Pouliot, cleared. They can be assigned to their AHL clubs.
