The NHL Department of Player Safety has announced that Chicago Blackhawks winger Pat Maroon has been fined $3,385.42 for elbowing.
Chicago’s Patrick Maroon has been fined $3,385.42, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for elbowing Dallas’ Mavrik Bourque.
— NHL Player Safety (@NHLPlayerSafety) December 30, 2024The infraction occurred late in the third period of Sunday’s 5-1 loss to the Dallas Stars when Maroon elbowed Mavrik Bourque. Maroon received a two-minute minor penalty for roughing on the play, as well as another two-minute minor for holding Logan Stankoven.
Maroon’s fine of $3,385.42 is the maximum allowable under the CBA.
Maroon finished the game with three hits, a giveaway and the four penalty minutes that he received during that sequence in the Blackhawks’ loss to the Stars.
This season, Maroon has produced at about the level one would expect from him at this stage of his career. In 34 games for the Blackhawks, he has 1 goal and 8 assist for 9 points.
Maroon is currently on a one-year, $1.3 million contract, and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
Maroon was a sixth-round pick for the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2007 NHL Draft, although he never played a game for the Flyers, getting traded to the Anaheim Ducks in 2010. He made his NHL debut with the Ducks in the 2011-12 season, and then spent five seasons in Anaheim before he was dealt to the Edmonton Oilers at the 2016 trade deadline. He then spent parts of three seasons with the Oilers before he was traded again to the New Jersey Devils at the 2017-18 trade deadline.
After walking to free agency in 2018, Maroon signed a one-year deal with the St. Louis Blues, where he won his first Stanley Cup with them. He then went to free agency again and signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning, winning two more Cups in 2020 and 2021 during his four seasons with them. He was then traded to the Minnesota Wild during the 2023 offseason, and then dealt again to the Boston Bruins at the 2024 trade deadline before signing his current deal with the Blackhawks this past summer.
The Blackhawks will look to snap their four-game losing streak when they host the Blues at Wrigley Field for the 2025 Winter Classic on New Year’s Eve at 4 p.m. CST. Chicago currently sits in last in the Central Division with a 12-23-2 record, which is also the worst record in the league.
