New England’s team is keeping some depth in the lineup.

On Monday, the Boston Fleet announced that the team has re-signed forward Shay Maloney to a two-year contract through the 2026-27 season.

“I am so excited to be back with the Fleet,” Maloney said in a release. “From draft day to now, Boston has always felt like home. I can’t wait to get to work with the team again this fall.”

Maloney was originally taken by the Fleet in the sixth round, 34th overall, of the 2024 PWHL Draft. She came to the team after spending a year and a half playing in the SDHL for Leksands IF. When the 2024-25 PWHL season got underway, Maloney was in Lowell with a team hoping to get back to the playoffs.

Maloney proved to be a solid and reliable player at both ends of the rink. In 30 games, the 25-year-old scored three goals and six assists for nine points, posting a plus/minus of +1. Her ice time rose as the season wore on, playing over 15 minutes a game from February onward. Maloney ended up finishing ninth in scoring among PWHL rookies.

Unfortunately, it didn’t help Boston qualify for the playoffs, as a loss to the eventual Walter Cup champion Minnesota Frost on the final day of the regular season knocked the team out of contention.

Prior to her pro career, Maloney honed her craft at Brown and Quinnipiac in the NCAA ranks. After three seasons with the Bears, the McHenry, Illinois native transferred to join the Bobcats in 2022-23. There, she set career highs in goals (15), assists (16) and points (31), helping Quinnipiac qualify for the national tournament.

In 126 college games, Maloney scored 39 goals and 41 assists for 80 points.

With the signing, the Fleet has 18 of a possible 23 players signed to standard contracts for the 2025-26 season. The team is undergoing a minor retooling process after losing players such as captain Hilary Knight and Hannah Bilka during the expansion process.
