Calgary Flames sign goaltender Devin Cooley to two-year contract
The Calgary Flames have signed goaltender Devin Cooley to a two-year contract worth $775,000 per season.
Cooley, 27, appeared in his first six NHL games with the San Jose Sharks during the 2023-24 season, posting a 2-3-1 record and an .878 save percentage.
The Sharks had acquired the Los Gatos, California product from the Buffalo Sabres on March 8 in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. Cooley made his NHL debut with the Sharks on March 17 and, on April 6, became the first California-born goaltender to win a game for any California-based NHL club.
An undrafted player, Cooley suited up for the USHL’s Muskegon Lumberjacks, the BCHL’s Wenatchee Wild, and the NAHL’s Springfield Jr. Blues during his junior career.
Cooley began attending the University of Denver in 2017 and emerged as a tandem goalie with the Pioneers in the 2018-19 season, posting an 11-6-2 record and a .934 save percentage in 20 games.
After finishing his collegiate career in 2020, Cooley signed with the Nashville Predators as a free agent and spent the following three seasons as a minor-league goaltender in their organization. He subsequently signed a one-year deal with the Sabres in 2023.
Cooley will slot in as the Flames’ No. 3 goaltender behind Dustin Wolf and Dan Vladar, both of who are younger and have slightly more NHL experience.
Wolf, 23, has been hailed as the Flames’ goaltender of the future in the years since the club selected him with the No. 214 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. The Gilroy, California product has posted an 8-7-1 record with an .896 save percentage in 18 career games over parts of two seasons with the Flames.
Barring any additional signings, Cooley will most likely start the 2024-25 season as the starting goaltender for the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers. Back in April, the Flames signed Swedish goaltending prospect Waltteri Ignatjew, who will also play for the Wranglers in the upcoming season.
