It was a chaotic end to Tuesday night’s meeting between the Dallas Stars and Vancouver Canucks.

The Stars seemed to be on their way to victory, effectively eliminating the Canucks from playoff contention. Dallas was up 5-2 heading into the final minute of regulation, but thanks to tallies from Marcus Pettersson and Pius Suter, Vancouver rallied to tie the game and send it to overtime. Kiefer Sherwood then played the hero for the Canucks, giving the team a 6-5 win, temporarily keeping their postseason hopes alive.

While the ending was exciting for fans around the game, Stars fans certainly didn’t like the result, especially since it hurt their chances of closing the gap on first place in the Central Division. A win would’ve put them three points behind the Western Conference-leading Winnipeg Jets. Instead, they sit four points back of the Jets with just four games remaining in the regular season.

Finishing first in a division is always an accomplishment. However, with how the seeding is shaping up in the Central, Dallas might end up having to play against the Colorado Avalanche in the first round, rather than maybe a more favorable matchup against the Minnesota Wild.

On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Carter Hutton and Tyler Yaremchuk explain why dropping points could be determinental to the Stars’ postseason hopes.

Carter Hutton: This happening now is better than in one of the games in the playoffs because this is one of those games where if you blow a game like this in the playoffs, you may not recover from this. This is a tough one, mentally, to deal with but now they can park it and move on.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Sure, maybe a lesson that is a nice kick in the pants right now before the playoffs, but they let a point slip away and now they’re four back of the Winnipeg Jets. … I’m sure the Dallas Stars don’t want to see Colorado in round one, especially with the [Gabriel] Landeskog news. … Winnipeg is still clearly in the driver’s seat for that top spot in the conference, which would mean a softer first round matchup, getting Minnesota instead of getting Colorado is a big, big difference. … Dallas letting those points slip, it’s not inconsequential that they lost that point last night.
