“This team activity was in violation of Article 16.5(b) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association,” the league wrote in a statement, adding that the $100,000 will go to the NHL foundation.
According to the CBA, “December 24, Christmas Day and December 26 shall be off-days for all purposes, including travel, and no Club may request a Player’s consent to practice on such days for any reason.”
The first to report that the team would be fined by the NHL was TSN reporter Darren Dreger.
Going into Monday, the Stars are 21-13-1 with 43 points, fourth in the Central Division and currently holding on to the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. They are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games.
Forward Matt Duchene leads the team with 33 points, scoring 14 goals and 19 assists. Close behind is forward Mason Marchment with 27 points (12 goals and 15 assists), while Jason Robertson has 25 points (eight goals and 17 assists).
Stars’ forward Tyler Seguin started the season strong, scoring nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points in 19 games. However, an injury forced Seguin to undergo hip surgery and he is expected to miss four to six months. With Seguin out of the lineup and his $9.85 million salary off the books, the Stars could make a trade to improve their lineup.
The Stars will open a three-game home trip on Tuesday when they face the Buffalo Sabres, before starting the new year with games against the Ottawa Senators and Utah Hockey Club.
