The National Hockey League fined the Dallas Stars on Sunday for violating the league and Players’ Association’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), as the team asked its players to participate in what was described as an “optional” skate on Dec. 26.

This was first reported by TSN reporter Darren Dreger.

“December 24, Christmas Day and December 26 shall be off-days for all purposes, including travel, and no Club may request a Player’s consent to practice on such days for any reason,” according to the CBA.

Going into Sunday, the Stars were 20-13-1 with 41 points, fourth in the Central Division and currently holding on to the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. They’re 4-5-1 in their last 10 games.

Forward Matt Duchene leads the team with 30 points, scoring 13 goals and 17 assists. Close behind is forward Mason Marchment with 27 points (12 goals and 15 assists), while Jason Robertson has 23 points (seven goals and 16 assists).

Stars’ forward Tyler Seguin started the season strong, scoring nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points in 19 games. However, an injury forced Seguin to undergo hip surgery and he is expected to miss four to six months.

With Seguin out of the lineup and his $9.85 million salary off the books, the Stars could make a trade to improve their lineup.

Their next game is Sunday night, as they head to the Windy City to face the Chicago Blackhawks. After their game against Chicago, the Stars open a three-game home trip to face the Buffalo Sabres, Ottawa Senators and Utah Hockey Club.
