The Dallas Stars have re-signed defenseman Alex Petrovic to a one-year, two-way contract, the club announced Wednesday afternoon.

According to CapFriendly, Petrovic’s new deal with the Stars carries a $775,000 NHL cap hit and a $375,000 AHL salary. He’s guaranteed to earn at least $400,000 next season.

Petrovic, 31, spent the entire 2022–23 season with the American Hockey League’s Texas Stars, collecting nine goals and 27 points in 71 games. He added three goals and five points in eight games with Texas during the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Despite beginning his NHL career with promise as a member of the Florida Panthers in 2013, Petrovic has played exclusively in the AHL since the 2019–20 season.

The Panthers originally selected Petrovic in the second round (No. 36 overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. The six-foot-four defender, who shoots right, emerged as a regular NHL defender with the Panthers during the 2015–16 season.

In an effort to protect Petrovic from the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft, the Panthers traded Reilly Smith to Vegas in a deal that ensured the Golden Knights would pick Jonathan Marchessault. Smith, Marchessault, and the Golden Knights currently lead the Panthers 2–0 in the 2023 Stanley Cup Final.

Petrovic spent the entirety of the 2017–18 season with the Panthers before being traded to his hometown Edmonton Oilers midway through the 2018–19 campaign. He appeared in only nine games with the Oilers before signing with the Boston Bruins as a free agent in 2019.

Despite signing NHL contracts with the Bruins, Calgary Flames, and Stars over the last four seasons, Petrovic has not appeared in a single NHL game since leaving the Oilers. He has served as an alternate captain with AHL Texas in the last two seasons.

In 263 games over parts of seven NHL regular seasons with the Panthers and Oilers, Petrovic has racked up five goals and 50 points. He’s added one goal and four points in six career Stanley Cup Playoff contests.
