Do the Red Wings have an answer in net after early season issues?
Though they started the season with three goaltenders, many have been questioning how strong the Detroit Red Wings are between the pipes in the first two weeks of the season.
Whether it be a lackluster start from Ville Husso on the opening night of the season or a couple of disappointing performances against the New York Rangers, Detroit’s 2-3-0 start can be largely attributed to the play in goal.
However, there was a glimmering bit of hope this past Saturday. Alex Lyon came up big against the Nashville Predators, stopping 37 of the 39 shots he faced as the Red Wings skated out of Smashville with a 5-2 win. While Talbot had a great start himself against the Predators the week before, many are pointing at Lyon as being the 1A goaltending in Hockeytown, especially since he was the guy who helped carry the team to nearly making the playoffs last season.
However, many wonder if Lyon, Talbot, or any of the goaltenders Detroit has in its system is capable of being a difference-maker for a team whose goal it is to snap an eight-year playoff drought.
On Monday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton joined Tyler Yaremchuk and Colby Cohen to give his thoughts on the goaltending situation in the Motor City.
Carter Hutton: I’m a big fan of Cam Talbot, I’m a big fan of Alex Lyon, but these are not the guys that are going to bring you to the Promise Land. This a great platoon of goalies. Talbot had his time where he carried the team, and he’s played well, and Alex Lyon has been doing this year after year, but we know he’s not the guy to bring you the Promise Land. Obviously, the signing of Ville Husso is a killer right now…he gets one game and he gets sent down…For the Red Wings, they need to find a guy, they need to find a goalie fast. I think, at this point, the way this team is built, it’s not going as planned. I think you can ride the platoon of Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot, but I just don’t think this is a team that gets you to the playoffs.
