A familiar (last) name is heading to the Tar Heel State.

On Sunday, Carolina Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky announced that the team has signed forward Josiah Slavin to a two-year, two-way contract. The deal carries a $775,000 AAV through the 2025-26 season, with a minor-league salary of $150,000. $450,000 will be guaranteed to Slavin.

It is Slavin’s first NHL contract in two seasons, as he was on an American Hockey League contract with the Toronto Marlies.

“Josiah is a smart, two-way forward with good size,” Tulsky said in a release. “He competes hard, brings high character and has some NHL experience. We’re thrilled to add him to our organization.”

The Erie, Colorado native was originally taken by the Chicago Blackhawks in the seventh round of the 2018 NHL Draft. After two seasons at the NCAA level with Colorado College, Slavin signed his entry-level contract with the Blackhawks in March 2021. It was a two-year deal with a cap hit of $925,000.

He wouldn’t last long with the team, as he was dealt to the Anaheim Ducks in February 2023, but didn’t receive a qualifying offer at the end of the season. That led Slavin to Toronto, where he had a chance to thrive in a depth role, playing just about every game. In 70 appearances with the Marlies, the former Chicago Steel product scored 10 goals and 14 assists with a plus/minus of +4. He also appeared in all three Calder Cup Playoff games for Toronto.

In 15 NHL games, Slavin has registered a single assist, that coming in the 2021-22 campaign. In 201 AHL appearances, he has scored 38 goals and 43 assists, with one assist in six playoff games.

Slavin will play alongside his older brother, Jaccob. The Hurricanes are no strangers to having brothers in their lineup, as veterans Eric and Jordan Staal played together for a few seasons.
