Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk was one of the top stories during their incredible run to the 2023 Stanley Cup Final. In 20 Stanley Cup Playoff games, Tkachuk racked up 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists), and a plus-12 rating. That also included four dramatic game-winning goals.

This year, it has been a bit of a different story.

In 21 playoff games in 2024, Tkachuk has 20 points. While that number alone is far from disappointing, he has only scored five goals and has failed to be the consistent difference-maker that he has been so good at during his career.

To make things worse, he has not scored since Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final against the New York Rangers. He has four assists and is minus-3 in nine games since, including just one assist so far in the Final despite his team leading the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 in the series.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Who are you maybe looking at and going ‘That’s a disappointing effort so far?’

Frank Seravalli: Matthew Tkachuk. The effort’s not disappointing, but certainly the production is. It’s amazing that as we cast [Conn Smythe Trophy] ballots in Game 4… I don’t know who was on the list, but I can’t even remember Matthew Tkachuk being in the conversation. If someone had told you that heading into the playoffs, the Florida Panthers would have a chance to sweep the Stanley Cup Final and Matthew Tkachuk isn’t one of Florida’s Conn-Smythe candidates, I think you’d have been floored…

… He still has 20 points in 21 playoff games… It’s not as if he’s been on a milk carton. It’s just that if you were to rank the most impactful Florida Panthers to this point in the postseason… You’d probably go something like [Aleksander Barkov, Sergei Bobrovsky, Gustav Forsling, Carter Verhaeghe]. What that means is it’s opportunity. This is prime time for Matthew Tkachuk to cause chaos, to do everything that he does so well as the guy that drags this team into the fight on a nightly basis.
