Sprong has been building up the miles over the past couple of years. He made a name for himself with the Kraken during the 2022-23 season, setting career highs in goals (21), assists (25), and points (46).
The Netherlands-born winger then signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings. He had another productive year, posting 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points.
Then, this past summer, Sproing signed with the Vancouver Canucks. However, after playing just a few games with the Canucks, he was traded back to Seattle for future considerations this past November.
In total, Sprong has been traded five times in his career.
However, Sprong’s return to the Kraken wasn’t ceremonial. After 10 games, he was placed on waivers and joined the team’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds. In 19 games with the Firebirds, the 27-year-old has scored 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points.
In 19 NHL games this year, Sprong has scored just two goals and three assists for five points.
Sprong is on a one-year contract with a cap hit of $975,000, set to become an unrestricted free agent.
Across nine NHL seasons, which have seen stops with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks and Washington Capitals, Sprong has appeared in 363 games, scoring 87 goals and 77 assists for 164 points. He’s also posted three points in 13 postseason games.
The Devils (33-24-6) have been very busy near the trade deadline. Over the past 24 hours, the team has acquired defensemen Brian Dumoulin, Cody Glass and Dennis Cholowski. New Jersey is third in the Metropolitan Division, 16 points behind the Capitals for first.
The Kraken (26-33-4) is seventh in the Pacific Division, 12 points back of the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
